LearnMathApp is an open-source educational tool that helps children ages 6 to 12 practice core math skills through interactive exercises, while also offering developers a real-world Python and Django project to explore and contribute to.

With LearnMathApp, children ages 6 to 12 get a more engaging way to practice essential math skills. This open-source project, built using Python and Django, is part of the ConnectApp initiative. The application brings together interactive exercises and progressive difficulty, aiming to make math practice accessible and motivating for young learners. It targets children under 13, a group defined as "child" under the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Federal Trade Commission’s COPPA Rule, codified at 16 C.F.R. Part 312 official regulatory text.

How LearnMathApp Supports Math Learning

LearnMathApp centers on two core operations at a time: addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division. Each operation includes five planned levels, which creates 20 operation-level combinations for targeted practice. The platform adjusts exercise difficulty based on the selected age, so children can work at a pace that fits their needs across a seven-year age span. Timed exercises encourage focus and regular practice. The application is meant as a supplemental tool to reinforce math skills. It does not replace classroom instruction or teachers. No validated learning-outcome data or independent educational efficacy studies are currently available for the application.

Open Source for Education and Developer Growth

LearnMathApp also gives developers a chance to learn and contribute to a real-world Python and Django project. The codebase lets contributors explore backend logic and exercise generation, as well as answer validation and time-based challenges. There are opportunities to work on frontend interface design and automated testing. Developers can see how different components interact within a maintainable and extensible software architecture.

Designing for Young Learners

Building software for children means focusing on usability and accessibility. LearnMathApp uses a soft, light-blue background and rounded cards for each operation. It provides clear visual feedback and simple navigation. The design keeps the interface inviting and easy to use, with readable typography and feedback that supports learning.

Privacy and Quality in Open Source

As an open-source project, LearnMathApp encourages collaboration and learning among developers. The project highlights the importance of software quality, privacy, and data minimization, especially since it is built for children under 13. Under COPPA, operators of online services directed to children must provide a privacy notice and obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing children’s personal information. Parents must be able to review and delete their child’s data. The rule bars conditioning a child’s participation on disclosure of more information than is reasonably necessary. COPPA also requires that any personal information collected from children be kept only as long as needed for its purpose, and must be deleted using reasonable measures to protect against unauthorized access see the COPPA Rule. Technical choices—such as anonymous play and session handling—can affect compliance obligations. The project’s development approach puts reliable logic, security, and ongoing testing at the forefront to maintain high standards.

Opportunities for Community Contribution

LearnMathApp continues to evolve, and the community has several ways to get involved. Developers and educators can help by improving exercise generation and designing accessible interfaces. They can also develop automated tests, refine progress tracking, and suggest new educational activities. The project welcomes participants with different levels of experience, from students learning Django to experienced Python developers.

ConnectApp and the Broader Mission

LearnMathApp is part of ConnectApp, an independent initiative focused on open-source development and responsible software engineering. The goal is to share useful applications, foster collaboration, and promote privacy and technical quality in educational technology. More information about ConnectApp and its projects is available on its official channels.
